About Ujjain

History of Ujjain is as ancient as the history of the Indian subcontinent itself.

One of the major seats of spirituality, Tantra and a commercial hub on the erstwhile "silk route" from time immemorial, Ujjain then known as "Ujjayini or "Awantika" has been known for the holy abode of Lord Mahakal (the Jyotirlinga) and the place where lord Krishna and his immortal friend Sudama completed their studies under the guidance of Maharishi Sandipani.

In early medieval times, Ujjain produced and nurtured immortal and eminent scholars like Sanskrit Poet Mahakavi Kalidas, Raja Bhoja, Bhrathari, Varahmihir, Kshapnak, and Dhanvantari. Education continued to receive paramount importance in the time of King Vikramaditya, the glorious King of the Gupta dynasty who ruled Awantika.

Geographically, Ujjain is located at 23.110N and 75.470E and falls on the Tropic of cancer bisecting India and taken to be the mean for all astrological, meteorological and time calculations and hence is the holy abode of Lord Mahakal (the Jyotirlinga).

Ujjain is well connected by train from all the Four Corners of the country and can be reached directly from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Cochin etc. Regular state transport buses ply from different destinations of M.P., Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
